Elizabeth Hanley in The Seattle Times – This bill is bad for sex abuse survivors and for taxpayers in WA
SGB attorney Elizabeth Hanley recently wrote an op-ed, published by The Seattle Times, in opposition SB 6239 which would create unnecessary obstacles for survivors of sexual abuse to access justice in Washington state.
In her piece, Elizabeth outlines how the bill would require survivors to go through a full administrative hearing before they can move forward with their claims, forcing them to relive trauma twice while increasing costs for taxpayers.
Survivors deserve their day in court and meaningful access to the justice system. Lawmakers should reject SB 6239 and pursue a solution that protects survivors and public resources.
Together with SGB attorney Becky Roe, Elizabeth has proposed a tailored Historical Abuse Pre-Filing Claims Commission designed specifically for older abuse claims against the state, promoting early evaluation and resolution.
