Becky Roe in The Seattle Times – WA Supreme Court rules in WSU hazing death

SGB attorney Becky Roe is featured in The Seattle Times, following a Washington Supreme Court ruling that universities are obligated to protect students from harm foreseeably caused by fraternity hazing.

This decision affirms the Court of Appeals’ decision that WSU's relationship with its Greek life organizations, through recruitment, sponsorship, and formal agreements with national fraternities, was enough to establish a legal duty of care. It is the first ruling of its kind from any state Supreme Court.

Martinez's case had been dismissed at the trial court level in 2022, before an appellate court, and now the state's highest court, found it should proceed. It returns to King County Superior Court, where a jury will hear the case for the first time.
